Ukraine, with the support of international partners, is modernizing the infrastructure at checkpoints on the country's western borders. [The initiative is aimed at improving the efficiency of the checkpoints, reducing waiting times and creating comfortable conditions for travelers and workers, the State Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development said, UNN reported.

The agency emphasizes that the checkpoints in Zakarpattia region have long been in need of changes: outdated buildings, insufficient number of lanes, lack of modern sanitary conditions, and limited space to service the growing traffic.

This led to delays, inconveniences for citizens and impeded the effective implementation of customs and border procedures.

As part of the modernization project, 381 LED lamps were installed at eight checkpoints: Dzvinkove - Lonia, Kosyno - Barabash, Uzhhorod - Vysne Nemecke, Maly Berezny - Ubl'a, Solotvyno - Sighetu, Chop (Tisa) - Zahony, Luzhanka - Beregsurany and Vylok - Tisabech

- reported in the Agency.

Also at the Uzhhorod-Vysne Nemecke and Luzhanka-Beregsurany checkpoints, modern modular buildings for border guards and customs officers' offices, sanitary modules, new road signs and water drainage road blocks were installed.

In addition, new garbage cans were installed for separate waste recycling. The road surface was renovated, road markings were made, and lanes were added and expanded. For example, the additional lane at the Uzhhorod-Vysne Nemecke checkpoint will increase the throughput capacity by 680 trucks per month and the turnover of agricultural goods by 14,000 tons per month.

Thanks to the cooperation with the USAID Project, we were able to implement quick solutions to improve the border crossing conditions. These improvements have had a positive impact on staff performance and the speed of document processing, which in turn has increased the overall efficiency of the checkpoints. We believe we have done everything we can to improve the border crossing experience for citizens

- said Stanislav Baluyev, Deputy Head for the Development of Checkpoints and Infrastructure Facilities.
