The former local law enforcement officer was sentenced by the Kovel City District Court . 

The defendant told the court that he did not remember the shot, and that he had come to his senses in handcuffs. The defendant apologized to the victim's mother and wife and stated that he was ready to be punished fairly.

The court found the defendant guilty of murder and illegal acquisition, carrying and storage of ammunition (part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentenced him to 11 years in prison. He also has to pay moral damages in the amount of UAH 1 million to the family of the deceased

The incident occurred at the end of February 2023. The convict invited his neighbor, whom he had known since childhood, to dinner to thank him for repairing his car. The feast with alcohol lasted until late at night

Investigators found out that around 3 o'clock, the neighbor was about to go home. While he was putting on his shoes in the hallway, the police officer took his service weapon and shot the man in the chest. The victim died in hospital a month later from his wounds.
