In Ukraine, the first operation of heart retransplantation was performed

Doctors of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine performed the first heart retransplantation in Ukraine. The patient was first transplanted with a heart seven years ago abroad. This was reported on the official Facebook page of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, writes UNN.

Details

30-year-old Petro underwent the first heart retransplantation in Ukraine. This is his third heart! Seven years ago, the first transplantation was performed in Minsk, but over time the heart began to fail

- says the post of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

As reported by the Ministry of Health, over time, after the first transplantation, the new heart began to work worse. So when the situation became critical, Petro was assigned the first emergency status in the Unified State Information System of Transplantation (ESIS). This meant that with the appearance of an appropriate donor, Petro would be the first in line for transplantation.

The donor of the new heart for Petro was a woman from Bila Tserkva, who died of a stroke. Her family decided on posthumous donation after brain death was confirmed.

"The heart was transplanted to Petro, today he has been transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular ward. His condition corresponds to the level of the surgical intervention he has undergone," the Ministry of Health reports.

Supplement

Despite the fact that heart retransplantation in Ukraine has occurred for the first time, Ukrainian transplant surgeons have experience in repeated transplantation of other organs - kidneys and liver.

For example, in 2022, the First Medical Association in Lviv performed a successful kidney retransplantation for a 14-year-old boy, and in 2023, the O.O. Shalimov National Scientific Center for Surgery and Transplantology re-transplanted the liver to a 57-year-old patient.

As UNN wrote, the relatives of a woman from Bukovyna agreed to posthumous donation of her organs. Two kidneys were transplanted in Chernivtsi and Lviv, and the liver was delivered by helicopter to Kyiv for transplantation at the Shalimov Institute.
