Germany becomes the largest EU country to legalize cannabis consumption, allowing possession of up to 25 grams and home cultivation of up to 50 grams and three plants per adult, while distribution remains illegal.

In order to be able to grow and consume cannabis within the limits defined by German law as of Monday, April 1, you must have resided in Germany for more than six months.

Details

On the night of Sunday, March 31, to Monday, April 1, a law allowing recreational cannabis use in Germany came into force. After Malta in 2021 and Luxembourg in 2023, Germany becomes the largest country in the European Union (EU) to regulate cannabis consumption for its own population. Now it is allowed to possess 25 grams of dried cannabis in public places, as well as grow up to 50 grams and three plants per adult at home.

However, marijuana consumption is completely prohibited for foreigners in Germany.

Distribution of the drug outside of specially licensed clubs remains a criminal offense, especially if it is distributed to minors. These violations are punishable by imprisonment.

However, convictions entered in the Federal Central Court Register for cannabis-related crimes that are no longer punishable may be removed at the request of the person concerned. Anyone who is imprisoned for such crimes only should be released from prison.

Addendum Addendum

The first wisps of legal cannabis smoke appeared in front of the legendary Brandenburg Gate in the heart of Berlin on the night of Sunday, March 31, to Monday, April 1.

Meanwhile, there are also critics of the law, who point to a likely chaos. In particular, critics say that police lack accurate scales to determine the weight of hashish or marijuana.

Conflicts are inevitable. We are confident that due to various ambiguities and lack of legal definitions of various actions, there will be significant dissatisfaction, uncertainty and mistakes among all participants [in cannabis use and control]

- said Alexander Poitz of the German Police Union.
