Former serviceman prepared assassination attempt on GUR official for $100,000 from Russia, detained - Prosecutor's Office

Law enforcement officers prevented an assassination attempt on a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, who also serves as the deputy head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War; a former serviceman is suspected of plotting the murder of the GUR employee for 100,000 dollars from the Russian Federation, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported on Monday, UNN writes.

The name is not specified, but the position of deputy head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War is held by Major Andriy Yusov.

Under the procedural guidance of prosecutors from the Office of the General Prosecutor, a contract killing of a representative of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, who is also the deputy head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, was prevented

- the Office of the Prosecutor General reported.

"According to the investigation, a 38-year-old citizen of Ukraine — a former serviceman with combat experience and reconnaissance skills — agreed to organize a contract killing on behalf of representatives of the Russian Federation for a reward of 100,000 USD," the Office of the Prosecutor General stated.

According to the prosecutor's office, after receiving an advance of 10,000 dollars, the suspect began collecting information about the victim, his lifestyle, and place of residence. "The suspect repeatedly traveled to the area where the GUR representative lives, conducted surveillance, studied the terrain and possible escape routes after committing the crime. After gathering the necessary information, he decided to use an FPV drone for the murder and began searching for an executor with the appropriate skills and experience," the Office of the Prosecutor General indicated.

For conspiracy purposes, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the participants used construction terminology: the "murder" was called a "construction site" or "work," the client was the "foreman," the executor was the "laborer" or "builder," and the murder weapon was the "tool" or "cement."

As a result of a complex of investigative and search operations, law enforcement officers exposed the preparation for the crime and disrupted the implementation of the plan. On June 4, 2024, the suspect was detained in accordance with Art. 615 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He has been notified of suspicion of organizing preparations for a premeditated murder for mercenary motives, committed by contract, by prior conspiracy of a group of persons. A preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen for the suspect

- the Office of the Prosecutor General stated.

As reported by the National Police, the suspect was detained "with the tactical support of police special forces units, in cooperation with the Internal Security of the GUR MOU." During a sanctioned search at his place of residence, according to the police, mobile phones, a GPS tracker, a car, and other physical evidence were seized.

"Investigative actions are ongoing to identify the client, other possible accomplices, and all circumstances of the crime's preparation," the prosecutor's office noted.
