Zaluzhny's assistant, Gennadiy Chastyakov, was killed by a grenade that was presented to him for his birthday by an officer from the Commander-in-Chief's Administration without warning him of its authenticity.

An officer from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who gave grenades to the assistant to the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhny, will be brought to justice.  The State Bureau of Investigation has filed the case with the court.  This was reported by UNN with reference to the Bureau.

As UNN learned from its own sources in law enforcement agencies, the death of Zaluzhny's assistant was probably caused by a bad gift from Colonel Timchenko.

SBI officers brought to court the proceedings against an officer from the Office of the Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who gave grenades to his deceased colleague Hennadii Chastiakov. The Bureau's investigators completed the pre-trial investigation on March 29, 2024, after which the defense and victims had the opportunity to review the case file

- , the SBI said in a statement.

Reportedly, the serviceman, who was notified of suspicion of illegal sale of ammunition (Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) at the initial stage of the pre-trial investigation, handed over an explosive "gift" with grenades in honor of his birthday on that tragic day.

He did not warn his colleague about the authenticity of the grenades and did not make sure that he and others in the office understood that he was giving explosive devices.

As a result, while unpacking the "gift" at home, one of the grenades exploded in the hands of Chastiakov, who was sure that it was a souvenir glass. He died on the spot from his wounds, and his minor son sustained serious injuries.

The defendant is accused of misappropriation and sale of ammunition, negligent homicide and causing grievous bodily harm by negligence (Article 410 (4), Article 263 (1), Article 119 (1), Article 128 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The sanction of the articles provides for punishment for a set of criminal offenses in the form of imprisonment for up to 15 years.

Procedural guidance is provided by the Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office of the Central Region.
