China's Defense Ministry responded to the United States' statement about China's nuclear weapons: the Chinese military said that the development of nuclear weapons does not threaten other countries.
At the same time , China criticized the United States for its “stubborn” insistence on a first use policy and called on the United States to “reduce the role of nuclear weapons” in its defense policy.
Context
Last week, the U.S. military, which considers China its main challenge, published a report on China's military power, which states that the country has more than 600 nuclear warheads that can target more cities, military installations, and leadership positions in the United States than ever before.
The Pentagon has already warned that for the first time in American history, there are “two strategic competitors that are nuclear powers with large and growing nuclear arsenals,” referring to China and Russia.
