After a dust storm from the Sahara, bad weather hit Greece on Crete - there is a fatality due to the storm

A man died near Athens as a storm hit parts of Greece with hurricane-force winds and floods, and a Saharan dust storm covered the island of Crete, UNN reports with reference to the BBC.

Details

According to the fire department, the man was found under a car in the rural area of Nea Makri early on Thursday morning.

Due to storm "Erminio", streets were flooded, some schools were closed, and ferry services were paralyzed. Meanwhile, some flights to Crete were disrupted on Wednesday after dust from the African storm hung in the air, coloring the sky red-orange.

According to the national meteorological service, bad weather is expected in most parts of the country on Thursday "with prolonged and intense rain and storms, and possibly hail in some places."

In Crete, mainly in the west and south, a "red" warning is in effect from noon until late Thursday evening.

The fire department received 674 calls for help from Wednesday to Thursday morning. Most reports were due to fallen trees in the Attica region, which includes Athens.

Due to strong winds, ferries remain docked in ports, and Greek media report that some services may resume on Thursday if the weather improves.
