The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a resolution requiring President Donald Trump to withdraw American troops from Iran or obtain separate Congressional approval to continue military actions. This was reported by The New York Times, according to UNN.
Details
The War Powers Resolution was supported by 215 congressmen, while 208 voted against it. Along with the Democrats, the document was supported by four Republicans – Tom Barrett, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson, and Thomas Massie. The decision became one of the most notable manifestations of dissent within the Republican Party regarding the military campaign against Iran, which has been ongoing for four months.
The vote took place after the Republican leadership twice attempted to postpone consideration of the document due to a lack of votes to block it. At the same time, Democrats utilized the War Powers Resolution procedure, which mandates that Congress consider such initiatives within set timeframes.
The document must now be considered by the Senate. Even if finally approved, its legal force remains a subject of dispute, as the Trump administration insists that the president has constitutional authority to conduct military actions without additional Congressional authorization.
However, the vote became another signal of growing dissatisfaction with the war among some American lawmakers. According to the publication, an increasing number of members of Congress, including Republicans, consider the conflict with Iran too costly and are calling on the White House to seek ways to end it.
