On the US side, negotiations will be led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. The Russian delegation will likely be headed by the head of the sovereign fund, Kirill Dmitriev.
Earlier this week, Witkoff and Kushner held meetings in Berlin with Ukrainian and European representatives, discussing security guarantees for Kyiv in exchange for abandoning immediate NATO membership.
Security guarantees against the Kremlin's ambitions
Washington offers Ukraine a promise of mutual defense, similar to NATO standards. The Trump administration hopes that Moscow will agree to Ukraine's membership in the EU and Western security guarantees as part of a final agreement. However, Vladimir Putin on Wednesday gave no signals of readiness to abandon plans to destroy Ukraine's sovereignty, and the Russian side remains adamant in its demands.
