The meeting took place against the backdrop of intensified Russian ballistic missile strikes on Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's calls for allies to increase deliveries of air defense systems and missiles.
According to the British Foreign Office, Miliband was expected to emphasize that Ukraine's security is inseparable from the security of Europe and the entire transatlantic space, and to reaffirm the United Kingdom's readiness to support Ukraine for as long as necessary.
Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and the situation in Gaza were also discussed
The State Department said that the parties also reaffirmed their shared position on the need to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Ahead of the meeting, Miliband said that restoring the operation of the Strait of Hormuz was of great importance for reducing economic pressure and the cost-of-living crisis in the United Kingdom. In addition, he planned to raise the issue of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
This was already the second meeting between Rubio and Miliband after their talks on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila in July. During his visit to Washington, the British foreign secretary is also scheduled to meet with World Bank President Ajay Banga.
