Norway has announced an additional contribution of 100 million Norwegian kroner (approximately $10 million) for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chornobyl NPP, which was damaged as a result of a Russian drone attack. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy, according to UNN.
Details
It is noted that the funds will be directed through the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA), which is administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The funding will allow for the restoration of the Chornobyl NPP's safety systems following a Russian drone attack in February 2025, which damaged the NSC over the destroyed fourth power unit
The Ministry of Energy recalled that at the end of April this year, the US announced the allocation of $100 million for the repair of the Chornobyl confinement. Furthermore, within the framework of the International Chornobyl Conference on Recovery and Nuclear Safety, an agreement was signed with the EBRD for EUR 30 million for the first stage of the confinement's restoration, and partners made initial commitments totaling nearly EUR 100 million.
We thank all international partners for their sustained support and solidarity with Ukraine. These contributions are an important step toward strengthening nuclear and radiation safety not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe
Recall
On February 14, 2025, an explosion and fire occurred at the Chornobyl NPP after a Russian drone hit the protective shelter over reactor No. 4. The fire was extinguished, the radiation level remained unchanged, but the damage to the shelter was assessed as significant.
