In conditions of increasing competition in the labor market, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Ukrainians to get the desired position. For a recruiter to pay attention to your resume, it must be clear, structured, and meet the requirements of the vacancy. How to create an ideal resume and what mistakes to avoid, UNN was told by HR at Work.ua Yaroslav Pavlenko.
In a highly competitive environment, it is important to create a resume that quickly attracts the employer's attention. Here are the key recommendations:
- clarity and conciseness;
The optimal volume is 1-2 pages, without unnecessary details.
Limit the description of responsibilities. For each position, highlight no more than 10 points and formulate them briefly and to the point.
- adaptation to the vacancy;
Do not send a universal resume – adjust it for each position, emphasizing relevant experience and skills.
- focus on achievements;
Describe not just responsibilities, but specific results, for example: "Increased sales by 30%", "Optimized the process and reduced company costs by 15%", etc.
- keywords;
Use similar wording in the resume text as in the vacancy.
- clear structure.
Highlight sections in your resume such as: experience, education, skills, additional information.
How to properly structure a resume so that it stands out among a large number of candidates
For a recruiter to quickly find the necessary information, the resume must be structured:
- name, contact details. Indicate phone number, email, city of residence. In addition, add a messenger convenient for you (Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp). This will simplify communication with the recruiter;
- resume objective (desired position). Briefly state what position you are looking for;
- brief intro about experience. Briefly describe your professional path. For example:
"12 years in sales, B2B, working with large clients, selling such-and-such services."
"8 years of experience in IT recruiting, selection of technical specialists, closing 200+ vacancies.
This will immediately give the recruiter an understanding of your field and expertise.
- key skills. Indicate 5-7 main skills that match the vacancy;
- work experience. Place information starting from the last place of work. Also indicate the total experience in each role in the format: - March 2024 – present (11 months). - January 2020 – February 2024 (4 years 1 month). This will help quickly assess your experience without additional calculations;
- education and courses. If there is additional training, such as online courses, certifications — indicate them;
- additional sections. Volunteer experience, internships, language skills — everything that can strengthen your resume.
It is also important to use a readable font (Arial, Calibri), highlight headings, avoid complex designs — recruiters review resumes for up to 30 seconds.
What mistakes should be avoided when writing a resume
Among the most common mistakes are:
- general phrases. For example: “communicative, stress-resistant”, etc. It is better to specify: “I have experience working with clients in the B2B segment”;
- irrelevant experience. Do not add work experience that is not related to the vacancy. For example, if you are applying for a marketing position, your part-time job as a waiter 10 years ago is not valuable to the employer. Focus on skills and projects that directly meet the requirements of the vacancy;
- large amount of text. Recruiters do not read long paragraphs, it is better to use lists;
- unnecessary information. Do not write about personal preferences, marital status, school (if you have higher education);
- spelling errors. Be sure to check the text before sending;
- inappropriate photo. If you add a photo, it should be business-like, not from a vacation or a selfie.
How to make a resume more attractive without much experience
If you have little experience, focus on skills and potential. Explain why this position interests you. At the beginning of your resume, briefly tell why you want to try yourself in this role and what you have already done for it. For example: "I want to develop in sales, I completed an online course on negotiations, mastered a CRM system, and have already tried myself in a volunteer project." This will help the recruiter see your motivation and readiness for work.
Write about education and courses. Mention certificates, additional training, internships.
If your profession involves creativity, you should create a portfolio. Links to examples of such creative works should be indicated accordingly.
If you have no experience, it is important for the recruiter to see your potential. That is why it is worth indicating achievements in your studies.
What current resume trends for 2025 should be used
Updated trends will help make your resume more effective:
- personalized resumes. The more a resume matches a specific vacancy, the more chances of a response;
- evidence-based achievements. Candidates are increasingly using numbers, cases, examples of completed tasks;
- focus on hard skills. Employers pay attention to specific tools and technologies that the candidate works with. For example: "Confident user of AI tools for task automation (ChatGPT, Midjourney, Notion AI)"? "Experience with CRM systems (Salesforce, HubSpot), "Data analysis in Power BI". Instead of general phrases about communicativeness or adaptability, which are evaluated only during interaction, it is worth showing real skills that will immediately give an understanding of your value;
- interactive elements. Some candidates add QR codes to their portfolio or video presentation;
- resume without a photo. More and more companies are focusing on skills and experience, not appearance;
- experience with AI tools. More and more companies expect candidates to have skills in using artificial intelligence, so it is worth indicating which tools you work with and how they helped you perform your tasks.
