Keir Starmer
British politician, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
Keir Rodney Starmer was born on 2 September 1962 in London to a nurse and a toolmaker. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Leeds and a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford. In 1987, he was called to the bar and began a career in human rights law. He was knighted in 2014.
From 2008 to 2013, he headed the Crown Prosecution Service. In 2015, he was elected to the House of Commons.
From 2016, he served as shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union in the Labour Party's shadow cabinet under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.
In 2020, he became leader of the Labour Party. On 5 July 2024, following the Labour Party's convincing election victory, he became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. On 22 June 2026, he announced his resignation due to domestic political difficulties, having served in office for less than two years.
