A woman who received a pig kidney transplant in a New York hospital on April 12 has died, her surgeon told the media on Tuesday.
Lisa Pisano, 54, suffered from heart and kidney failure before her surgery and was not suitable for a human transplant. She received a heart pump, called an LVAD, on April 4, and on April 12, she received a pig kidney transplant. In May, 47 days after the transplant, doctors removed the genetically engineered organ because it was obstructing blood flow.
