August 1 is a special day that opens the last month of summer. According to the new church calendar, Orthodox Ukrainians celebrate one of the most beloved holidays — Honey Savior (Makoviy), which marks the beginning of the Dormition Fast. Worldwide, people celebrate Spider-Man Day and draw attention to medical issues, reports UNN.

Honey Savior (Makoviy) and the beginning of the Dormition Fast

 Due to the transition of the OCU and UGCC to the New Julian calendar, from now on August 1 honors the Procession of the Honorable Wood of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord and the memory of the seven Maccabean martyrs. Among the people, this holiday has long been called "Honey Savior" or "Makoviy." Traditionally, on this day, water, honey of the new harvest, poppy seeds, and special protective bouquets of wildflowers and herbs ("makoviyichyky") are blessed in churches. Also, from this day begins the strict Dormition Fast (Spasivka), which will last until August 14 (the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos).

For those who follow the old (Julian) calendar: August 1 commemorates the memory of Venerable Macrina. In folk tradition — "Macrina's Day." The weather on this day traditionally foretold what autumn would be like: if it rains, autumn will be wet; if sunny, warm and dry.
