In Venezuela on Sunday evening, citizens were waiting for the results of the most significant elections in the last 25 years of socialist rule. The opposition declared “reasons to celebrate” but called on its supporters to continue monitoring the vote.
On the eve of the election, President Nicolas Maduro expressed confidence in winning and securing a third term in office. At the same time, the opposition, which received active support, in particular from leader Maria Corina Machado, handed the candidacy to Edmundo González, a 74-year-old former diplomat, because of the ban on public office for Machado.
