There are no grounds for changing the name of the city, it's all been pulled out of the water, says a member of the Brovary City Council.

There are no grounds for renaming the city of Brovary to Brovari. The arguments given by the MPs who authored the relevant resolution are pulled out of thin air. This opinion was voiced by a deputy of the Brovary City Council, the head of the legal department of the city council, Oleksandr Kashtaniuk, in a commentary to UNN.

Details

The deputy emphasized that the overwhelming majority of Brovary residents consider the idea of renaming the city absurd and are ready to defend their position.

"We had a study done (by the Institute of Ukrainian Language and History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine - ed.) There are no grounds for changing the name of the city, everything has been pulled out of the water. We wrote an appeal to the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada on this issue.

And, most importantly, the townspeople are against it - look at what people write on social media, local publics. Renaming Brovary is absurd, and I am even ashamed that we are discussing it.

Even raising this issue now is completely out of time. People who have nothing better to do are doing this. Let them go to the front instead. And we will defend the name of our city with all our might," said Oleksandr Kashtaniuk.

Optional

In a comment to UNN, Oksana Prodan, advisor to the head of the Association of Ukrainian Cities, noted that decisions to change the names of settlements must be made with the opinion of the community in mind.

According to her, the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada should contact the relevant local government to get the community's position. And then - take this position into account when preparing a decision on possible renaming.

In her turn, Lidiya Senko, a member of the Brovary City Council, notes that it is not appropriate to raise the issue of renaming cities now. All efforts should be directed to supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And after the victory, deal with the names of settlements.

Famous Brovary residents are categorically against the renaming: multiple European and world swimming champion Oleh Lisohor, future participant of the Olympic Games in Paris, wrestler Alina Hrushyna (Akobia), former world champion in professional boxing Yuriy Nuzhnenko and many others.

Context

A group of MPs led by Roman Lozynsky of the Golos faction registered a resolution in the Verkhovna Rada to rename Brovary to Brovari.

Local residents, with whom UNN spoke, do not support this idea. In particular, they do not understand where the name "Brovari" came from, which, moreover, does not sound very nice.

Brovary residents also say that MPs simply have nothing to do. And such controversial decisions are definitely not the right time.
