The European Union has officially approved financial assistance to Ukraine and increased sanctions pressure on Russia. The new package of restrictions will reduce the aggressor's military capabilities.
The European Union today officially adopted the final document underpinning the EU's 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine and approved the 20th package of sanctions against Russia in response to the escalation of the aggressive war against Ukraine, the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU announced on Thursday, UNN reports.

"Today, the Council officially adopted the final legislative act underpinning the provision of a 90 billion euro EU loan to Ukraine. The loan will help finance Ukraine's urgent budgetary and defense needs in 2026 and 2027," the Cypriot Presidency stated on social media.
"Today, the Council adopted the 20th package of sanctions against Russia in response to the escalation of the aggressive war against Ukraine. The Cypriot Presidency continues to advance EU support for Ukraine's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace," the Cypriot Presidency also stated.
Promised, delivered, implemented. The EU's strategy for achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine rests on two pillars: strengthening Ukraine; increasing pressure on Russia. Today, we have moved forward in both directions: unlocking a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine, providing financial and military support for 2026-2027; adopting the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, which reduces its ability to wage war. Europe stands firm, united, and unwavering in its support for Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine expects the first tranche of funding under the new EU loan in the near future - by the end of May or early June.
