The European Commission has reduced the duty on Tesla imports from China to 9%. For other Chinese manufacturers the tariffs were also adjusted, but remain higher than for Tesla.

The European Commission has adjusted the amount of duties on imports of Chinese electric cars into the EU. After that, the tariff on imports to the EU of electric cars of the American company Tesla, produced at its plant in Shanghai, was reduced from 20.8% to 9%. This UNN writes with reference to Deutsche Welle.

Details

The European Commission has reduced a planned tariff on imports of Tesla cars made in China to 9%.

For the products of BYD Co., one of the largest Chinese electric car manufacturers, the duty was reduced from 17.4% to 17%, for Geely - from 19.9% to 19.3%. The tariff for other Chinese manufacturers that cooperated with the EC will be 21.3%, not 20.8%, as announced earlier. Companies that do not cooperate with the European Commission will have to pay 36.3% instead of 37.6%.

The EC's final decision will be published by the regulator after all comments have been analyzed.

Context

Beijing has officially complained to the WTO about the European Commission's increase in duties on EU imports of electric cars from China.

The EU had 10% duties on imports of electric cars from China. However, the EU accuses China of heavily subsidizing the production and export of electric cars. These models are capable of seriously squeezing European manufacturers, especially if offered at artificially low prices. Automakers from France, Italy and Spain supported the duty increase, while Germany opposed it.

Recall

In July, the European Commission imposed temporary countervailing duties on imports of battery electric vehicles from China, which were as high as 37.6% at the time of implementation. However, the new EU tariffs on Chinese electric cars do not apply to hybrid cars, which allowed Chinese automakers to continue selling partially electric hybrids in Europe at lower tariffs.
