Crews have been working for weeks to set up the stage on the sand of Copacabana Beach in the Brazilian city, where spectators from around the world are expected to arrive to see the Colombian singer perform on May 2 as part of her record-breaking world tour.
The man's legs were crushed as a result of the lifting system's operation, according to a statement from the fire department.
Workers managed to free the man, and he was taken to the hospital, but he did not survive, the state fire department (CBMERJ) reported.
"Unfortunately, the technician died in the hospital," said a statement from the concert organizer, Bonus Track.
"Suddenly we saw people running, and when we looked, the structure was lying on the ground," 51-year-old Antônio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, who was on the beach at the time, told AFP.
"People were saying that a man was stuck under it. People rushed to pull him out," he added.
