Share of smuggled cigarettes on Ukraine's illegal market halved - customs

The share of smuggled tobacco products on Ukraine's illegal market has halved over the year. However, the overall level of illegal cigarette trade has increased. This is reported by the State Customs Service of Ukraine, UNN reports.

According to the latest study by Kantar Ukraine "Monitoring of illegal trade in tobacco products", the level of illegal cigarette trade in Ukraine in April 2026 rose to 19.8% compared to 16.2% in April last year
At the same time, according to available data, the share of smuggled products decreased to 0.8% compared to 1.6% in the same period last year.
The results of the customs authorities' work in this area confirm the effectiveness of the measures being implemented. During the 6 months of 2026, customs authorities actually seized almost 1.3 million cigarettes during attempts of illegal movement across the border, the value of which is 9.1 million hryvnias

A 44-year-old citizen of Moldova has been notified of suspicion of smuggling cigarettes worth over 15 million hryvnias. The tobacco products were found under a load of strawberries at the "Mamalyha" checkpoint.
