Sexual harassment in the French entertainment industry: new investigation data

Sexual harassment and violence are quite common in the French entertainment industry, especially in cinema. The investigation revealed numerous cases during castings and filming. This is reported by The Guardian, UNN reports.

Details

Deputies Sandrine Rousseau and Erwan Balanan stated that sexual violence, harassment and bullying are "systemic and constant" in all sectors of French culture and the entertainment industry - from television and cinema to theater, radio, comedy, advertising, rock and classical music.

The investigation took five months: during this time, deputies received testimonies from almost 400 people, including actors and industry workers. They noted that the culture of silencing victims of these crimes is progressing in France against the backdrop of a sense of "collective denial." They described a "sexist environment," as well as racism in this area.

The report found that sexual harassment was a common occurrence during the casting process, including in film. Sex or nudity scenes also turned out to be a place where sexual harassment and rape occurred

Lawmakers presented nearly 90 recommendations, including better protection for actors and models under the age of 18 – they also proposed improving the regulation of actors' agents and casting processes. The deputies also proposed to ban the sexualization of minors on the screen and in fashion photographs.
