After Putin reiterated Russia's nuclear doctrine, the White House called Russia's rhetoric irresponsible throughout the conflict, noting that Russia had invaded Ukraine in a cowardly manner.
Russia brutally invaded Ukraine without provocation or justification, and Putin's comments about nuclear weapons have been reckless and irresponsible throughout the conflict.

When asked whether the US president was informed about Putin's interview and his comments on nuclear weapons, the White House press secretary said the following:
The President (Biden) is certainly aware of that. I can tell you that we understand that Mr. Putin has reiterated Russia's nuclear doctrine. (...) Russia's nuclear rhetoric has been reckless and irresponsible throughout the conflict. It is - it is Russia that brutally invaded Ukraine without provocation or justification. And we will continue to support Ukraine as they defend their people and their sovereign territory from Russian aggression.
