The EstLink 2 power cable connecting Estonia and Finland has been disconnected in an emergency. Operators in both countries are working to determine the cause of the failure, and power supply is being provided by backup facilities.

One of the two electric cables between Estonia and Finland has failed, Postimees reports, UNN writes.

Details

"Today at 12.26 a.m., the EstLink 2 power cable connecting Estonia and Finland was cut off. The cause of the breakdown is currently unknown. Elering and Fingrid, the system operators of Estonia and Finland, are working quickly to determine the cause of the failure as soon as possible," the statement said.

As noted, the security of energy supply in Estonia is ensured. "Until the end of tomorrow, Elering will use the reserve capacities available in the region, which, if necessary, will be used in the event of such failures to compensate for the electricity that was supposed to come through EstLink 2. In the event of a longer outage, starting the day after tomorrow, other generating capacities in our region will be used instead of EstLink 2," the publication reports.

Addendum

EstLink 2 consists of converter stations in Estonia and Finland and more than 170 kilometers of DC lines, of which about 12 kilometers are laid overland in Estonia as an overhead cable, about 147 kilometers run along the northern part of the Gulf of Finland as a submarine cable and about 14 kilometers are laid overland in Finland.
