New Prime Minister Appointed in Romania

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has appointed his former advisor, MEP Eugen Tomac, as the country's Prime Minister. This was reported by Digi24, according to UNN.

Details

It is noted that Tomac's candidacy was put forward nearly a month after the resignation of the previous cabinet led by Ilie Bolojan due to tensions within the governing coalition.

Dan noted that the main tasks of the new Prime Minister will be maintaining Romania's pro-Western course, ensuring financial stability, completing PNRR funding programs by the end of August, as well as fighting corruption and advancing digitalization.

"I chose a person independent of parties, but one who has the necessary experience to negotiate with parties, as this requires consensus and political experience. I expect the same responsibility from the political parties,"

- Dan said.

In turn, Tomac announced that he would present a team of specialists to the Romanian Parliament – a technical rather than a political government.

"We will adhere to the outlined direction of belonging to the European family, strengthening the strategic partnership with the US, and our transatlantic relations in general, with our role in NATO being a priority,"

- stated the newly appointed head of the Romanian government.

It should be added that Eugen Tomac will have 10 days to form a new cabinet and convince the parliamentary parties to grant him a vote of confidence.

As a reminder

On May 5, the Romanian Parliament supported a vote of no confidence in Ilie Bolojan's government due to harsh reforms. President Nicușor Dan began consultations on forming a new Cabinet.
