Details

The Republic of Moldova will introduce a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days. The legislative initiative, presented at the plenary session of the parliament by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, was supported by 56 deputies of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS).

The decision was made against the backdrop of risks associated with the possible termination of gas supplies by Russia's Gazprom to Moldova's Transnistrian region from January 1, 2025.

For reference

The Republic of Moldova remains vulnerable from an energy point of view, largely dependent on electricity purchases from the Kuchurgan power plant located to the left of the Dniester, on the territory controlled by the separatist authorities. If the Russian concern Gazprom starts supplying gas to the Transnistrian region on January 1, the decision will affect businesses and residents on the left bank of the Dniester. On the right bank, according to experts, the authorities will have to buy the necessary electricity on the international market at higher prices, according to a publication by Radio Iasi.

To recap

Earlier, UNN also reported that in the absence of full operation of the Kuchurgan power plant , the electricity supply of the Republic of Moldova directly depends on imports from Romania, but the neighboring country also faces a shortage of electricity.
