The Syrian Democratic Forces have taken control of the city of Deir ez-Zor in the east of the country. Government forces and their allies, supported by Iran, unexpectedly left the city and its environs.

According to the Syrian monitoring center for Human Rights, the Syrian Democratic Forces control Deir ez-Zor. Government forces had previously left the city.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (IVA), led by Kurdish military formations, have captured the strategically important city of Deir ez-Zor, in eastern Syria, activists say. According to the Syrian monitoring center for Human Rights,the Syrian Democratic Forces currently control Deir ez-Zor.

Earlier it became known that Syrian forces and their allies, supported by Iran, "suddenly" withdrew from the city of Deir ez-Zor and its environs in the east on Friday. This was reported to AFP by a non-governmental organization of the country.

Assad's army launched a counteroffensive against Islamist rebels near the strategic city of Hama with air support. Earlier, the rebels captured Aleppo and advanced 130 km to the South.
