The men who took hostages in a Russian colony said they were demanding a hostage exchange “for the sake of their Muslim brothers.” They claim to be acting because of Russia's “oppression of Muslims.

The men who took hostages in the Russian penal colony (VK-19) said they did not demand money or a helicopter. Earlier, this was reported by pro-Kremlin TV channels, UNN reports with reference to Astra.

"The prisoners claim that their demand is a hostage exchange. They say they captured the colony's staff 'for the sake of Muslim brothers and prisoners' and 'the establishment of Sharia' and because 'Russia oppresses Muslims everywhere,'" Astra writes.

In addition, a video from the seized Volgograd colony 19 is being shared on social media.

"Here's the camp of Nineteen, they captured the garbage men. They killed those who oppressed and tortured Muslims. They took books from some people, rugs from others. So we are with them, no mercy," the men say in the video.
