Iraq's dominant parliamentary bloc has nominated businessman Ali al-Zaidi as its candidate for prime minister after weeks of political disputes. This was reported by AP, according to UNN.

The decision was made by the Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shiite parties that supports the current majority. Following the nomination, President Nizar Amidi tasked al-Zaidi with forming a government.
The candidacy was the result of internal negotiations within the bloc. Previously, the coalition had considered the return of former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, but that idea was abandoned in favor of a compromise figure.

The coalition's statement noted that al-Maliki and current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani withdrew their candidacies to overcome the political deadlock.
Ali al-Zaidi is the chairman of the board of Al-Janoub Islamic Bank and has not previously held public office.

Following his nomination, he stated: "This appointment comes at a delicate time that requires concerted efforts from all political and social forces."
According to the Iraqi constitution, the candidate has 30 days to form a government and secure the support of at least 167 members of parliament.
The new government will have to operate amidst regional tensions and economic challenges, particularly due to the impact of conflicts on oil exports.
