Georgia extends aid payments and free medical care for refugees from Ukraine

The Georgian government has extended for three months, until July 1, 2026, the payment of aid and free use of a number of medical services for Ukrainian citizens who arrived in the country due to hostilities. The relevant changes have been made to government decrees from 2022, UNN reports with reference to "News Georgia".

Details

According to media reports, payments amount to 300 lari per family and 45 lari per person.

Funding is provided through the Social Service Agency based on a list provided by the Agency for Refugees and Ecomigrants.

However, individual payments of 45 lari are not due to those who already receive similar assistance under the Georgian Law on International Protection or have left the country.

As for medical services, within the framework of state programs for Ukrainian refugees, immunization, treatment of tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS, mother and child care, psychiatric support, diabetes treatment, dialysis, assistance for rare diseases and, if necessary, permanent replacement therapy, as well as consultations and emergency care, including, are available free of charge. The same services are covered by state insurance for Georgian citizens.

The organization of medical care is handled by the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Protection of Georgia.

Ukrainians permanently residing in Georgia are eligible for benefits. Permanent residence status is maintained during short-term trips (up to three days), but is lost during long departures from the country.

Add

The Georgian government does not specify how many Ukrainian refugees are in the country. As of autumn 2022, their number was almost 26,000, of which about 7,000 were minors. The Embassy of Ukraine reported that only a fifth of the citizens who fled the war in the country receive assistance from the Georgian government.

At the same time, refugees from Ukraine in Georgia can use some medical services, municipal kindergartens, schools, sports and art clubs free of charge.
