The former head of the Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble has died at the age of 81. The politician is known for playing an important role in the unification of West and East Germany in 1990 as head of the German Ministry of the Interior. This was reported by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, UNN reports.

Schäuble was considered one of the most prominent politicians in the CDU. He shaped federal policy for decades and was the longest-serving member of the Bundestag.

He has held government positions since the 1980s, including Federal Minister for Special Assignments, Head of the Federal Chancellery, and Minister of the Interior under Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

He even survived an attempt on his life. In 1990, a mentally ill man shot Schäuble several times with a pistol during an election campaign. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, the politician refused to give up his career and served in the Bundestag for several decades.

In the government of Angela Merkel , the politician served as Minister of the Interior from 2005 to 2009, and Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2017. From 2017 to 2021, the politician was the President of the Bundestag.
