NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyi announced a change in the denomination inscription on the new 2000 hryvnia banknote featuring Vasyl Stus due to a discussion about calligraphy associated with a Russian designer. The decision was made to avoid associations with the Russian Federation on a banknote featuring a person killed by Russia.

After comments, the NBU will change the denomination inscription on the 2000 hryvnia banknote featuring Stus

The denomination inscription on the new 2000-hryvnia banknote featuring the image of Vasyl Stus will be changed after a discussion regarding the calligraphy of the denomination and its stylistic association with a font adaptation once made by a Russian designer, the head of the NBU Andriy Pyshnyi reported on social media on Wednesday, writes UNN.

When we presented the banknote with Vasyl Stus, I said: he is a moral absolute. Words have consequences. A discussion arose in the professional community regarding the calligraphy of the denomination – its stylistics are linked to a font adaptation once made by a Russian designer. One could argue about glyphs and licenses. Legally, we are fine. But I asked myself another question: can a banknote featuring a person killed by Russia have even a shadow of an association with the russian federation? The answer is obvious. Therefore, we have the only correct decision. The denomination inscription will be changed

- wrote Pyshnyi.

At the same time, the head of the NBU thanked "the attentive professionals who are not indifferent to how our hryvnia looks. This is how responsibility should work – mutually".

The National Bank of Ukraine decided to update the stylistics of the denomination inscription on the new banknote. The graphic image of the letters of the inscription will be created in full compliance with the appearance of the letters in the official Cyrillic version of the Bickham Script font, without author's variations

The updated inscription will be applied to new 2000 hryvnia banknotes. "Since the banknote has not yet been put into production, making changes to the design will not affect the timeline for its introduction into circulation. The banknote, as previously announced, will be put into circulation on September 4, 2026," the National Bank added.
