The Ukrainian company Fire Point has for the first time released details of the Freya project – a promising anti-ballistic missile system being developed as a cheaper and faster alternative to the expensive Patriot systems. This was reported by Defense Express, according to UNN.
Details
According to the publication, the new system is intended to help Ukraine amid a global shortage of PAC-3 MSE interceptors for the Patriot and the constant threat of Russian ballistic strikes. Defense Express notes that Freya is seen as a vital project for strengthening Ukrainian air defense.
The US is selling Patriots to allies at higher prices
It also became known this week that the US has once again increased the cost of Patriot anti-aircraft systems for Switzerland, even though the contract was signed back in 2021. In addition to the price increase, delivery schedules are also being pushed back.
Defense Express drew particular attention to the new American 155mm self-propelled artillery system MDACS from BAE Systems. The system uses Hypervelocity Projectiles and is designed to destroy aerial targets, including drones and cruise missiles such as the Kh-101 and "Kalibr".
In addition, a Russian "Gerbera" drone was spotted for the first time equipped with a 12-element "Kometa-M" satellite communication antenna, which has increased protection against electronic warfare. Meanwhile, Germany's Rheinmetall and Telekom announced the joint development of systems to protect critical infrastructure from "Shahed"-type drones, specifically using SIM card analysis in the UAVs.
