The Ukrainian and Russian sides, on the eve of Easter, began handing over letters from families and parcels from the International Committee of the Red Cross to prisoners of war. Details

According to Lubinets, this is happening according to pre-agreed lists of 1,500 people, which the Office of the Ukrainian Ombudsman exchanged with the Russian Commissioner for Human Rights, Tetyana Moskalkova. According to the agreement of the parties, all letters for citizens of Ukraine sent by their family members will be handed over to the addressees.

This was agreed by the parties to continue the humanitarian initiative launched earlier, Lubinets emphasized. The official reminded that this initiative is aimed at ensuring that every detainee can report about themselves after being captured.

They also discussed with the Russian side the continuation of the practice of exchanging letters from prisoners of war as feedback for families about their fate, as well as measures for the return of prisoners of war and the resolution of humanitarian issues.

Ukraine adheres to the norms of international humanitarian law. I emphasize that families must have the right to receive information about their relative in captivity, and he - about his family

– said Lubinets.

He added that according to the Geneva Convention, every prisoner of war must be held in dignified conditions with the realization of all rights.
