The Trump administration has approved a 30-year agreement that gives American companies a key role in Saudi Arabia's nuclear program. The document provides for the potential construction of a uranium enrichment plant in the kingdom.

The administration of Donald Trump announced that the United States and Saudi Arabia have reached a landmark agreement to provide the kingdom with a civilian nuclear program and potentially open opportunities for uranium enrichment on its territory. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, informs UNN.

Details

It is noted that the 30-year multibillion-dollar agreement gives American companies a central role in developing Saudi Arabia's nuclear infrastructure, while blocking foreign competitors.

A key provision of the new agreement will be a commitment by American companies to build a uranium enrichment plant in Saudi Arabia if a joint U.S.-Saudi study determines that such a step is justified. This provision will give the United States influence over Saudi Arabia's nuclear program and, as Trump administration officials claim, a way to prevent its misuse for military purposes

- the article states.

At the same time, the publication claims that the agreement, which is expected to be submitted to Congress in the coming days, will certainly prove controversial among many lawmakers who oppose the spread of nuclear technology in the unstable Middle East.

It will be difficult for lawmakers to block the agreement. Overcoming a presidential veto would require a joint resolution and a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate

- the media writes.

It is indicated that Saudi Arabia insists on peaceful intentions, although Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the country's de facto leader, stated in 2018 that if Iran ever develops nuclear weapons, his country will follow suit.

Last week, Yemeni Houthis, backed by Iran, announced the imposition of a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, which could open a new front in the confrontation between the United States and Iran.
