The US did not issue a visa to the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister to participate in a UN Security Council meeting. The Iranian Foreign Minister was also likely denied entry.

Russia's Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya stated that the United States did not issue a visa to Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov to participate in a UN Security Council meeting in New York. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

According to Nebenzya, Alimov, who is responsible for UN-related issues, was supposed to participate in a meeting chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The Russian diplomat called this a "glaring case of disrespect" toward the Chinese presidency and a violation of the US's obligations as the host country of the UN headquarters.

"Despite all our attempts to convince the American side to issue him a visa, this visa was ultimately not granted,"

– Nebenzya stated during the Security Council meeting.

He also noted that, according to available information, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was also supposed to attend the meeting, did not receive a visa either. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq emphasized that the host country must ensure the issuance of visas to all representatives of member states to participate in the organization's events.
