Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued an official statement regarding the unacceptability of interference by American officials in the country's internal affairs. Ottawa's reaction followed reports of meetings between representatives of the US State Department and the "Alberta Prosperity Project" (APP) group, which advocates for the separation of the energy-rich region from Canada. This was reported by the Financial Times, writes UNN.

According to the Financial Times, American diplomats have already held three meetings with APP representatives. The separatists plan to ask the US for a $500 billion credit line to support the province's independence. Mark Carney emphasized that Donald Trump did not raise this topic during personal conversations, but the position of some administration members, particularly Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is causing concern.

We expect the US administration to respect Canadian sovereignty. I am always clear about this in my conversations with President Trump

– Mark Carney stated during a press conference.

Position of regional authorities and accusations of treason

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith distanced herself from radical calls for secession, although she emphasized that about 30% of the province's residents are dissatisfied with Ottawa's policies. The main point of conflict remains the construction of an oil pipeline to the Pacific Ocean through British Columbia. The latter's premier, David Eby, sharply condemned the separatists' contacts with Washington.

Going to a foreign country and asking for help in the breakup of Canada... that is treason

– David Eby commented on the situation.

At the same time, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent publicly supported the right of Albertans to dialogue, noting: "People want sovereignty. They want what the US has." Carney suggests that such rhetoric from Washington may be an element of pressure before the review of the trade agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada (USMCA).
