Ohio Senator J.D. Vance has accepted the Republican Party's nomination for vice president of the United States. The 39-year-old Vance spoke at the party convention, describing his path and vision of the country's future.

Ohio Senator J.D. Vance agreed to become the Republican candidate for vice president of the United States on Wednesday, CBS News reports, UNN writes.

Vance's speech on the third day of the Republican National Convention marked his first official appearance as Trump's vice presidential candidate. The former US president watched Vance's speech from his box at the Fiserv Forum arena in Milwaukee.

"Tonight, Mr. Chairman, I stand here humbled and grateful to announce that I officially accept your nomination for Vice President of the United States of America," Vance said.

Elected to represent Ohio in the Senate in 2022, Vance told the audience in detail about his upbringing in a small town in Ohio and paid tribute to his grandmother, whom he called Mama, and who raised Vance while his mother struggled with addiction. Vance's mother, Beverly Aikins, attended the speech and sat next to House Speaker Mike Johnson in a box for family and friends. Trump and those in the arena gave her a standing ovation.

Describing his journey from Appalachia to joining the U.S. Marine Corps after 9/11, attending Yale Law School, and running for the Senate, Vance said he learned that the nation needs a leader who "fights for the people who built this country."

"President Trump represents America's last hope for restoring something that, if lost, may never be found again: a country where a working-class boy born far from the halls of power can stand on this stage as the next vice president of the United States," said Vance, 39.

His wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, introduced her husband at the convention, calling him "the most interesting person I've ever known." "It's hard to imagine a more vivid example of the American dream. A boy from Middletown, Ohio, raised by his grandmother in difficult times, was chosen to help our country overcome some of its most serious challenges," she said.

During his speech, Vance addressed the assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, and said his actions after the shooting demonstrate his commitment to the nation. "As we meet tonight, we cannot forget that this evening could have been very different. Instead of a day of celebration, it could have been a day of heartache and mourning," he said.

After the assassination attempt, the former president called for unity and several of his former opponents during the Republican primaries delivered speeches at the convention. Most notable among them was former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who declared her support for Trump during a speech on Tuesday.

Vance also delivered a message of unity and urged Americans to support a party that is not afraid to discuss ideas in search of a better solution.

The Republican Party for the next four years, according to Vance, is "united in our love of America and committed to free speech and the open exchange of ideas.

Addendum

At 39 years old, Vance is the first millennial to be on the party's main ticket. "His age stands in stark contrast to Trump, 78, and President Biden, 81, who is being called upon by those within the Democratic Party to drop out of the race after his shaky performance in last month's debate," the publication notes.

Vance, who rose to prominence after the publication of his memoir Highlander Elegy (also called A Country Elegy), criticized Trump during the 2016 campaign but apologized for his derogatory remarks in recent years. The book rose back to the top of the bestseller lists after Vance was elected to join Trump at the top of the party's ticket.
