At the same time, Reuters notes that despite the demonstrative unity of Moscow and Beijing in their confrontation with the US, the parties failed to conclude a large-scale gas deal that the Kremlin had been counting on.
The agency emphasizes that the post-summit statement demonstrated that despite Xi Jinping's desire to maintain stable and constructive relations with Donald Trump following his recent visit to Beijing, the positions of China and the US remain fundamentally different on key issues where Beijing continues to draw closer to Russia.
