Liu Pengui, spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said in response to Rubio's letter: "The allegations are purely malicious fabrications. China strongly opposes them."
Maria Van Kerckhove, acting director of the WHO's department of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, said earlier this week that the increase appears to be due to a rise in the number of children who have contracted pathogens they had avoided during the two years of COVID-19 restrictions.
As a reminder, the World Health Organization (WHO) has asked China for detailed information about the rise in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children, which its China office called a "routine" check.
