Two children trapped in a smoke-filled apartment in Kyiv region were rescued by firefighters after neighbors heard them screaming and called the emergency services.

In the village of Makariv, Kyiv region, one of the apartments in a five-story building caught fire. Two children were alone in the apartment and could not get out on their own. UNN reports this with reference to the State Emergency Service.

The fire occurred on the top floor of a high-rise building.

Local residents tried to open the door of the smoke-filled apartment on their own. Rescuers evacuated them and then unlocked the door.

They examined the premises and found two minor children born in 2012 and 2021 on the balcony. They were immediately taken out and handed over to doctors - the children were frightened and inhaled carbon monoxide.

The rescuers also took their unconscious cat to the air, which they managed to save.

The children's mother appeared after the fire was extinguished, but did not comment on her absence. The kids were lucky that their cries were heard by concerned neighbors who called "101".
