The Pentagon said it was not surprised by Russia's nuclear doctrine update, as it had been signaled earlier.

The United States said it was not surprised by Russia's updating of its nuclear doctrine, as Russia has been signaling about it for the past few weeks, but there are no signs that Russia plans to use it in Ukraine. This was stated by Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh at a briefing on November 19, UNN reports.

"We aren't surprised by Russia's update to its nuclear doctrine. It's something that they've been signaling that they intend to update over the last several weeks. It's the same irresponsible rhetoric that we've seen before and that we've seen frankly for the past two years. So, it's something that we're going to continue to monitor, but we don't have any indications that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon within Ukraine. And we don't see any changes that need to be made to our own nuclear posture as well," Singh said.

Russia updated the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons to include attacks by coalitions and non-nuclear states with the support of nuclear states. The document provides for the possibility of a nuclear response to massive attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia's updated nuclear doctrine demonstrates that Russia does not want peace, but rather that the Russian dictator wants to destroy Ukraine and other countries of the world.
