In May 2026, the new passenger car market in the European Union countries increased by 3.2% year-on-year and reached 955 thousand registered cars. The largest growth was recorded in the electric vehicle segment, whose sales jumped by 42.9%. This is reported by Ukravtoprom, UNN reports.

According to ACEA, hybrid cars retained the largest market share in May.
In May 2026, 345.4 thousand new hybrid cars were registered in the EU, which is 9.7% more compared to the same period last year
At the same time, electric vehicles showed the most dynamic growth.
The electric vehicle segment grew by 42.9%. In May, over 203.4 thousand new BEVs were registered in EU countries
Meanwhile, demand for cars with traditional engines continued to decline. Registrations of petrol cars decreased by 20.1% - to 210.4 thousand units, and diesel cars - by 19%, to 69.5 thousand cars.
Also in May, 98.6 thousand new plug-in hybrids were registered in the EU, which is 12.2% more than a year earlier.
Overall, in the first five months of 2026, over 4.7 million new passenger cars were registered in the European Union countries.
Since the beginning of the year, the new passenger car market in the EU has grown by 4% compared to the same period in 2025 - Ukravtoprom reported.
