Tesla receives permission to expand its only European plant near Berlin to increase production from 500,000 to 1 million electric vehicles per year.
The Ministry of the Environment of Brandenburg has approved the plan of the American company Tesla to expand its only plant in Europe, located near Berlin. This was reported by DW, according to UNN.
Details
American electric car manufacturer Tesla has been allowed to expand its only plant in Europe to increase production. As a result, the American company will be able to start the first construction work in Grünheide near Berlin ahead of schedule.
However, the Brandenburg authorities' permit only covers the expansion of production on the existing plant site without deforestation. It does not apply to the planned expansion of the territory for the construction of a cargo terminal, which has caused protests.
Addendum
Tesla plans to double the annual production of electric vehicles in Grünheide from half a million to one million units. So far, it has managed to reach only 300,000 electric vehicles per year. The company of American billionaire Elon Musk has been producing electric vehicles in Grünheide since March 2022. The company employs about 12,000 people.
The planned job cuts at Tesla globally amid a slumping electric vehicle market have affected hundreds of jobs in Grünheide. In April, Tesla announced the closure of 400 jobs at this plant. However, the company plans to increase production in the future.
Environmentalists and local residents are very concerned about Tesla's plans, as the Grünheide plant is partially located in a protected area. The company intends to build another large factory and optimize the existing facilities.
