A strong explosion occurred in the town of Kurchatov near the Kursk NPP. The plant's administration had previously assured that the plant was operating normally, with security guards and staff undergoing training.

A strong explosion was heard over the city of Kurchatov, where the Kursk nuclear power plant is located, in the Kursk region, telegram channels report, UNN writes.

At the same time, earlier today, the Kursk NPP assured that the plant's security guards are manned and have enough protective equipment, and that the plant is operating normally, the Russian telegram channel Podyem reports.

"Earlier, the network reported that there are allegedly no male guards left at the Kursk NPP, only women are protecting the station, and employees were not explained the procedure for action in case of danger and were advised to 'take cover, but not told where,'" the publication notes.

"The Kursk NPP is operating normally. The plant security is staffed and performing its duties (...). There are sufficient protective equipment on the territory of the plant. The staff periodically receives briefings and participates in emergency drills," the administration of the nuclear power plant itself told Podyem.

The head of the city of Kurchatov, where the facility is located, Igor Korpuzkov reportedthat "several dozen kilometers from the city limits there are hostilities, the situation is tense", but all local services are working as usual. The mayor urged residents "not to panic". Today, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations declared a federal state of emergency in the Kursk region.
