Restoration of St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv to receive technical support worth one million euros

At the URC 2026 conference, an international initiative was launched to save St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv. This was reported by UNN citing a message from the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Nicholas in Kyiv.

During the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2026 in Gdańsk, a number of documents were signed that launch the practical phase of saving the church. This involves the provision of scaffolding and equipment for priority emergency and restoration work in the church. The estimated cost of the project is about 1 million euros.

Details

As part of international cooperation, an agreement was signed between Polimex Mostostal SA and the Parish of St. Nicholas in Kyiv. The document provides for the provision of scaffolding and necessary equipment for carrying out priority work in the church.

On behalf of the parish, the agreement was signed by the rector, Father Pavlo Vyshkovsky.

After signing the document, he noted that exactly 25 years ago on this day, the Pope, now Saint John Paul II, arrived at St. Nicholas Church on a pastoral visit.

"Times change, but the church was, is, and will be. And it must be restored," said Father Pavlo.

"A key element of the agreements was large-scale technical support," the message says.

Under the agreements, the scaffolding will be provided for indefinite use — until the restoration of the sanctuary is completed. The Polish side will bear the costs of their manufacture, transportation, and installation. At the same time, the preparation of permit documentation for the installation and use of the equipment will be ensured by the Ukrainian side.

The total estimated cost of the project, which includes the manufacture of scaffolding, its transportation, and installation, is about 1 million euros.

In addition, a letter of intent has already been signed between PZU SA and Polimex Mostostal SA regarding the creation of an initiative group for the project "Rescue Coalition for St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv." Its goal is to unite international partners for the further restoration of the church.

The parish emphasizes that the agreements reached are only the first practical step in a long restoration process. Despite the importance of the 50-year agreement on the use of the church, which opened a new chapter in the history of the sanctuary, the current focus is on the beginning of systematic state and international cooperation.

Ahead lies the implementation of emergency measures, further restoration, the involvement of international experts, and coordination with state authorities regarding the necessary permits.
