The expert commented on an attempt by some MPs to rename Brovary to Brovari.

Now we need to unite Ukrainian society, not create unnecessary lines of conflict, including through controversial renaming. Politicians who raise these issues should realize that this is primitive and even criminal PR. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Ruslan Bortnik in a commentary to UNN.

Details

The expert noted that during the war, the issue of various renaming should be postponed, because in most cases they will cause a political discussion. And society should prevent attempts by some politicians to promote themselves on such things.

"All renaming should be postponed during the war. First of all, they cost money, to varying degrees, because they are a banal change of plates, names, etc. And secondly, these renamings provoke political discussions, sometimes very difficult ones, which we do not need now. Today, we need to ensure the unity of Ukrainian society in the struggle to preserve the Ukrainian state, not create lines of conflict. Renaming is a very primitive and sometimes even criminal PR of certain politicians. I think that society should react to this accordingly," Ruslan Bortnik said.

The political scientist also emphasized that it is a normal practice for a democratic society to ask people whether they agree with the possible change of the name of their city.

Now it looks like someone wants to impose their will on the residents of Brovary without taking their opinion into account.

Recall

At an extraordinary session, members of the Brovary City Council almost unanimously decided to support the initiative to preserve the name of the city of Brovary and to appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with a petition to preserve the name of the city of Brovary, taking into account scientific and historical research.

The resolution to rename Brovary to Brovari was previously registered by a group of MPs led by Roman Lozynskyi, a representative of the Golos faction.

Commenting on the city council's decision, Brovary Mayor Ihor Sapozhko noted that there are three conclusions of scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine that the name "Brovary" is historical and should be preserved.

He added that by voting at an extraordinary session, the deputies confirmed the position of the majority of Brovary residents who oppose changing the city's name.

"Given that the initiative to rename the city has been repeatedly considered by the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada, and that we have repeatedly appealed with certain justifications, the deputies today decided to approve the relevant decision of the local government and appeal to the Verkhovna Rada to keep the historical name of Brovary.

In my opinion, taking into account independent polls, with today's vote, when 24 deputies supported the appeal to the Verkhovna Rada, we have clearly expressed the opinion of the residents that the city should be called Brovary," said Ihor Sapozhko in an exclusive commentary to UNN.

Optional

The Association of Ukrainian Cities stated that decisions on changing the names of settlements must necessarily be made with the opinion of the community in mind. The relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada should contact the relevant local government body to obtain the community's position. And then take this position into account when preparing a decision on possible renaming.
