A Russian court has sentenced a man for allegedly preparing an assassination attempt on the occupying head of Crimea, Aksyonov. The convict was sentenced to 18 years in prison and fined 350 thousand rubles.

A court in Russia has sentenced a man to 18 years in prison for "preparing an assassination attempt" on  the occupying head of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov, UNN reports with reference to Krym.Realii.

Details

The convict allegedly gained skills in the use of explosive devices and in June 2023 in Simferopol took an explosive device from a cache to be installed in Aksyonov's car, Russian media reported, citing the Russian Prosecutor General's Office.

It is reported that the man will spend the first 4 years in prison, the rest - in a strict regime penal colony with a fine of 350 thousand Russian rubles.

In July 2023, the Russian FSB announced that it had prevented an attempted assassination attempt on Aksyonov. At the time, Russian media reported that a Russian citizen born in 1988 had been detained. The FSB claimed that the man was "preparing for a terrorist attack" but did not have time to carry it out, as he was detained "while removing an explosive device from a cache.
