The earthquake, which occurred at 06:48 local time (01:48 Kyiv time) at a depth of 35 km, triggered tsunami warnings that were later lifted.

A 70-year-old woman in North Sulawesi died after being crushed by building debris, and another person broke a leg jumping from a building, Indonesia's national news agency Antara reported.

Although the region experiences a high level of seismic activity, some residents told the BBC that this was one of the strongest earthquakes they had felt in at least the last six years.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned that tsunami waves less than 0.3 m were "possible" along the coasts of Guam, Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The tsunami warning was lifted two hours later.

A journalist living in central Manado recalled how the furniture in her room shook for several seconds. "It was very strong... I even felt dizzy," she told BBC Indonesian.

Even the roads near the house shook, she said, adding that the earthquake "felt like the strongest" she had experienced in the last six years.
